Ridiculously Oversimplified Disciple Making

Sometimes, we get the idea that making disciples is for someone else – other Christians should do that, but I’m just a… whatever. We think we don’t have all the answers yet or we don’t know all the right words or are missing the right discipleship tools.

I wish I could let you off the hook, but I just can’t. If you have aligned your life with Jesus, you will be making disciples. Remember that whole “I am the vine, you are the branches” thing? You know… “Remain in me and you will bear much fruit.” (Check out John 15 if you need a reminder.) More disciples are the fruit of a life that is lived connected to Jesus. If you stay connected to Jesus, He will produce more disciples through you!

And the good news is it’s not as complicated as we sometimes make it. It’s not a heavy burden that you just can’t handle. You’ve got everything it takes if you’re connected to Jesus.

Let me grossly oversimplify. Here is how you make disciples:

  1. Be One. Align your life with Jesus and let His priorities shape your life.
  2. Know Some People (Or Meet Some New Ones). Display for these people what Jesus’ life looks like.
  3. Explain Yourself. Tell them how the Gospel of Jesus has shaped and fueled your life.

It really is that simple. Live a life devoted to King Jesus and let Him draw the people around you toward Himself as they catch glimpses of Him through you. There are all kinds of tools that you can take and different methods or strategies you can use, but that’s the heart of it.

Obviously, there is a lot packed into those 7 words. If you’re in the Oakland, OR area, I’d love you to join us as we dig into it all when we get together on Sundays over the next few weeks. But even if you can’t make it, you can still get started making disciples. Just be one, know some people, & explain yourself.

Spend some time with Jesus and watch what happens…
